First and unique edition of this rare tourist guide. With engraved

plan of Switzerland as frontispiece, illustrated with engraved

plans of the principal towns (BL - ZH - LU - BE - GE), without

the original large map of routes through Switzerland ‘ Keller’s

folding map of Switzerland’. The object of this work is to enable

the tourist through Switzerland to follow something like a track

by which he can visit the most interesting parts of that ‘world

of wonders.’ Three months will generally be found sufcient to

make a complete tour, although the route here laid down was

performed in little more than two. A remarkable work, the detail

into which Coghlan delves giving us a tempting glimpse into

the opinions of this little-known traveller: much of the text be-

ing written in the rst person. Hints offered by the author range

from the bathing of ones feet in common brandy after arrival at

an inn for the night, to the choice of “costume for pedestrians”

(a dark-coloured suit with broad-brim straw hat) and the notable

observation that “few even of the most intelligent Swiss, on

their return after a long absence can refrain from tears when

the frozen peaks of their native mountains burst upon their

view.” This scarce account is not listed in Coolidge. Coghlan

produced a considerable number of travel guides to Britain and

the Continent during the 1830s and 40s, but very little is known

Première édition de cette traduction française, exemplaire com-

plet avec la grande carte de la Suisse et celle du Mont Blanc et

Alpes adjacentes, le panorama repl. (une vue des Alpes depuis

les environs de Berne), une vue repl. (lacs de Thoune et de

Brienz prise du sommet du Niess) et 3 planches de g. repl. (le

pont de bois de Wettingen, des bouquetins, une tête de vautour).

Dans le vol. 3, dès la p. 364 jusqu’au p. 438 il y a un ‘Faunula

Helvetica ou Catalogue des quadrupèdes, des Oiseaux, des

amphibies, des Poissons & des animaux testacées de la Suisse,

mis en ordre, & présenté selon le système de Linnée: avec des

renvois à la Zoologie Britanique de MM. Pennant, aux ouvrages

de M. Brisson & d’autres auteurs. Certaines espèces n’ont pas

Most of the 24 high quality photographic plates are portraits of

Swiss-guides. The author spent much interest in the ‘golden

age’ of alpinism (1855-1865), which started on the 17th of

September 1854, by the rst ascent of the Wetterhorn from the

Grindelwald and is ‘a red-letter day’ in the history of modern

mountaineering. Perret 1173.
